Today we commemorate an exceptional man—Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. An
American, an advocate for those whose voices were not heard, and a man
of faith, Dr. King spent his life seeking justice in a time when the
dreams of many went unrealized because of the color of their skin.
While Louisville and the rest of the nation have come a long way, we
still have further to go in our effort to secure equality and dignity
under the law for all people.
As we celebrate our Nation's Day
of Service, people of all ages and backgrounds will come together to
improve lives, bridge social barriers, and move our nation closer to
the “Beloved Community” that Dr. King envisioned. I encourage everyone
to find a find a volunteer opportunity by going to http://www.serve.gov/, or create one yourself.
It
is up to us to continue to build the ‘Beloved Community’ that leaders
like Dr. King worked so hard for—a community that honors diversity,
justice, equality, peaceful conflict-resolution, trust in others and
faith. It is up to us to serve our neighbors and our community. And
it’s up to us to keep his legacy alive.
Let’s work together, every day, to realize Dr. King’s vision.
Peace,
Tyler
